Our first one of the season. I think it’s from my sister, but there is no name, just a reference to a joke my family shares. So, I know it was one of them. My husband just got a present delivered to the house that’s from him to the kids. What cracks me up is the idea that he needs to get them something specifically from him. Does that mean all of their other presents are from me? I picked them out and bought them after all. Hmm. I don’t think that was his intent.
We spent the weekend in Williamsburg, Virginia, going to Christmastown at Busch Gardens (an amusement park). They use a couple of million bulbs to light up the entire park with trees and decorations. We were going to go to the Grand Illumination at Colonial Williamsburg which includes fireworks and carolers and the like, but we wouldn’t have gotten home until around 11 on Sunday night. Next year we’ll keep the hotel until Monday so we won’t have to try to drive home late. We didn’t end up staying for the festivities. This is the second year in a row that this has happened. Last year it was just too cold and we weren’t feeling well. This year it would have been too late by the time the buses back to the visitor’s center started running again and Older Boy wasn’t feeling well. We’ll try again next year. We had fun anyway.
We don’t take huge, formal family vacations, we take weekends away. Just a couple throughout the year, but they cost less and are just as fun. We’ll go to Disney World year after next with the in-laws, and that will be incredible, but we can’t afford to do that every year. So, a couple of weekends away and we are refreshed and have fun. Most of the stuff that we like to do for a weekend away is in Williamsburg which isn’t so far away that it’s a huge pain to get there. Nor is it too bad if we want to cut the weekend short and just come home (like last weekend).
Next year is our 15th wedding anniversary and November of next year marks 20 years that we’ve been together. I think I’m going to start saving now so that we can spend a weekend away at the same resort where we spent our honeymoon. The in-laws can take the kids for a few days and we can head out. The resort isn’t ridiculously far away (about 4 hours) but it’s incredibly wonderful and incredibly expensive. Worth it though for a honeymoon. Or a special anniversary. My goodness but we’re getting old. We’ve been together almost half my life now. Strange, but very cool.
Anyway, that’s all for next year. I have enough time to save for that between now and then. More important is getting through the next several months of no school and then school again. I need to study my patootie off and hope for the best. Meanwhile, the world keeps turning and bills keep coming due. Stinks, but that’s life.
