Christmas kick-off

I hope everyone here in the U.S. had a good Thanksgiving. We spent it with my in-laws and had a lovely day.

Christmas shopping is officially done. My sister was the last and her present shipped out to her yesterday. Now all that’s left is to put up the Christmas tree and decorate the house. That’s today’s mission. We bought a fake tree a few years ago (half price on the day after Christmas) and use that now instead of a real tree. While it’s not environmentally friendly, it is much cheaper in the long run. Ours is pre-lit and quite nice. It’s the best one I could afford at the time because I knew we’d have it for many years. The money I would have spent on the tree this year went to Christmas ornaments so that I could have a themed tree – blue, silver, and white, to go with my owl tree topper. Yes, it’s a shiny blue and silver owl. Our angel was done finally and we got rid of her so I needed a new topper. It’s adorable and I’ve never seen them again in the stores. I love it and I’m awfully glad I got it when I did. Yes, I’m a tad strange.

It’s become a bit of a tradition for my sister-in-law and my mother-in-law and I to go shopping on Thanksgiving evening. There’s a lot of controversy over stores opening on Thanksgiving night, but they wanted to go that first year and I tagged along. I got some very good deals and we’ve just kind of gone every year since. So, off we went this year. I didn’t even need anything, I just went along for the ride and to advise. My m-i-l wanted to start her shopping for my kids, so I was able to steer her in the right direction. We also found a great deal for my s-i-l to get for my son. It was a good trip. We always have fun, it’s a girl’s night out kind of thing, but with shopping instead of drinks.

Thankfully, the spending is done. We have everything we could possibly need for a wonderful Christmas. My s-i-l had a wonderful idea and I might try to incorporate it into our Christmas this year as well; she is doing a scavenger hunt for her son. Because he is getting several of the same types of gift this year (by choice), she is going to set up a scavenger hunt to make it a little more interesting. We may set one up for my kids as well for part of their Christmas. Especially since they aren’t getting a huge number of gifts this year (they are more expensive this year – I believe that trend is going to continue as they get older). There are some regular gifts that we can put under the tree, but we can set up a scavenger hunt for the big ones.

I know, everything is Christmas right now. Sorry. I love the holidays though. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s are all wonderful and I get so excited for the season. I know that not everyone celebrates Christmas and I apologize for my single-mindedness, I do actually know that there are other holidays celebrated by other religions and countries. I know that we all love to gather together and celebrate family and friends though. We may not have the same holidays, but we all like to celebrate life and renewal, fresh chances and old memories. That’s what the holiday season means to me.

OK, this is long enough. Happy kick-off to the Christmas season if you celebrate it, happy other holiday or just December if you don’t!
