The other side

Well, I’m on the other side of my birthday and all is quiet over here. I brought cupcakes to school, the whole class sang Happy Birthday to me, and I wore my wedding tiara all day. It was a pretty good day overall. I guess I worried at it so much that, when the day finally arrived, I was fine. I haven’t really thought about it in the last couple of days honestly. I am 40. The world didn’t end. On we go.

I wasn’t particularly frugal around my birthday this year. The cupcakes were expensive, as was the dinner that we went to as a family for my big day. 40 was hard and I indulged in some splurging to make it feel like a celebration instead of a funeral for my youth. While it’s time to settle back down, I don’t regret a minute of it. I made memories and had a great time. But, the cupcakes are gone, the birthday is over, and it is time to get back to frugal.

I don’t think frugal will be too much of a problem, what with this weekend being a hurricane weekend and all. There’s a hurricane off the coast that’s heading for the mid-Atlantic region, and we’re right there in the path of it. So, we’ll spend a little today to stock up on water and bread and peanut butter and things like that, and we’ll very definitely stay in this weekend. Weekends are when we spend the majority of our money, so this weekend will be enforced savings. Not the worst thing in the world as long as our house doesn’t get blown away. We are trying to decide whether to stay at our house or decamp to the in-laws’ place for the duration – they are less likely to lose power. No matter what, it’s going to be a long weekend.
