Redecorating and saving

We did a little moving around this weekend. We have two bedrooms upstairs and two down. We had been living in the upstairs rooms (like you do) for the past eight years. The problem was that it gets quite hot up there during the summer months. We had a window air conditioner but got new windows put in and were told that reinstalling the unit would void our warranty – screw holes in the window surround. While it’s not blistering yet, my husband has slept downstairs a couple of nights so far. So, this weekend we moved the bedrooms downstairs. It involved quite a bit of moving, but we have it almost all done. We just need to bring the kids’ dressers down.

If you had told me at the beginning of the day sunday that the downstairs rooms would be clean and moved by the end of the day, I never would have believed you. But, it was done. The great part is, now we can turn the air conditioner up a few degrees. It stays nice and chilly downstairs and it doesn’t matter that it’s warm upstairs. It gave our rooms a facelift as well. We are finally able to have the mirror over our dresser again (it’s much bigger than we remembered), and the kids’ room will be less crowded. We are going to see if we can’t find a bunk bed for the boys and free up even more space. The younger one is five and still sleeping in the day bed that we made out of his crib (on the crib mattress). Definitely time for him to move up. The older boy’s bed will become the guest bed. No waste!

It was a big change but, without buying anything new, we have totally changed the character of our house. And we are going to save money in the long run by being able to adjust the heating and cooling temperatures.  All in all, quite a positive change. It has inspired me to tackle the biggest mess in the house. I’m going a little at a time, but by the end of the week, that room will be clean and organized. Something as simple as moving a piece of furniture to a different location can do wonders for my motivation to get the rest of the house in order.
